KATHMANDU — Nepali Congress President Gagan Thapa has emphasized that emotional drive and willpower alone are insufficient for effective disaster management, highlighting the critical need for technical skills, practical knowledge, and systematic training.
Addressing the inauguration of the "Pre-Disaster Preparedness and Response Training" organized by the party's Central Policy, Research, and Training Academy, President Thapa stated that party cadres must undergo structured training to deliver impactful assistance during humanitarian crises.
"Disaster management is a specialized science. Without proper technical knowledge on how and where to assist, even well-intentioned efforts can lead to complications," Thapa remarked.
Role in Preserving Social Harmony
Highlighting the recent tense situation in Dewanganj Rural Municipality, Sunsari, Thapa stated that the party stepped in immediately to prevent violence and maintain communal peace. He noted that party leadership directed local leaders and workers to engage actively on the ground to counter provocative narratives and foster dialogue.
"A political party becomes a national force not merely through election results, but through its history, core values, institutional experience, and sense of responsibility," Thapa added, affirming that maintaining social stability remains a core historical duty of the Nepali Congress.
Organizational Direction & Social Initiative
Addressing internal party matters, Thapa acknowledged organizational friction arising from limited executive posts against a large number of aspirants. He urged party members to redirect their energies toward initiatives that yield tangible benefits for society.
Rooting his speech in the legacy of the party's founding leaders, he reminded cadres that the Nepali Congress was established for public service rather than the pursuit of power. He also announced a nationwide campaign starting Bhadra 24 (September 9), under which party workers across Nepal will commit to participating in at least one continuous social responsibility initiative throughout the year.
